El diseño en la Nueva Bauhaus. / Design in the New Bauhaus.

Definitivamente, no.

Contamos contigo.

Creating the designs of the present and the future. Designing the New Bauhaus.

We are in a moment of global crisis. A «Kairos» in which society needs answers, encouragement and certainties that show the way forward; a generous and inclusive path in which no one is left behind.

Integrative models are essential for this, that connect with citizens and facilitate their lives while taking care of the health of the planet.

The Bauhaus already began to illuminate this itinerary since its birth, at the beginning of the 20th century, and now it emerges as a reference that, from design, can give us the tools that society demands to find answers to its needs from creativity, innovation and beauty.

And the best thing is that we are all invited to participate in the design of the Europe and the planet in which we want to live in the coming years.

We have the immense opportunity and responsibility to commit ourselves and design our future together, but what is life if I don’t design?

1. Design in the New Bauhaus, engine of change and transformation. Pillar of a culture of integral development.

The Bauhaus is the origin of design in the 20th century.

It was born in 1919 and, directed in its beginnings by Walter Gropius, it generated the bases to conceive graphic, industrial and architectural design as we do today.

It is impossible to imagine design in 2021 without the contributions of Gropius himself, Mogoly-Nagy, Kandinsky or Lilly Reich in their different disciplines within the Bauhaus Elementary School.

His concern with function over form and the shared need to liberate humanity through a universal language of design are interesting vectors of change that remain in full force today.

A triangle, a square and a circle, together with a palette of primary colors (yellow, red, blue, black and white) defined a visual architecture and a basic grammar from which the world could be described and operated on it.

All the members of the Bauhaus, teachers and students, were interested in reducing reality to the elementary, to the basic and essential to, from there, seek simple and functional solutions to the challenges they faced. At first, it doesn’t seem like a bad way to deal with a problem, does it?

They also did it in community, putting into practice shared knowledge, making mistakes and learning by doing. But always daring to explore materials, techniques, textures and procedures.

Based on these precepts, the dynamics of the original Bauhaus managed to radically impact the society that welcomed it, producing change and transformation and turning design into one of the pillars of the social revolution movement.

It is obvious that the situation in which Europe found itself in 1919, when the Bauhaus was born, has little to do with the current one. But perhaps, if, as the Bauhasians and Bauhasians did, we go to the essence of the problem, the differences are not so many and the Bauhaus reference is the best possible to face the changes that, yes or yes, we will have to face in the coming years. to maintain our status quo and continue to develop as a society.

Stephen Quest, Director General of the JRC of the European Commission said:

“It is about facilitating the knowledge of the European community and creating interdisciplinary projects. We need a new design to figure out how to shape the places where we live. We have to follow the planet if we want to get better places to live. […] The key challenge is to fully articulate sustainability, with circularity; experience, including aesthetics, and included it.»

The New European Bauhaus can help us face this enormous challenge.

And do it in a beautiful and sustainable way. And do it together.

2. Foundations to build the foundations of the New Bauhaus design paradigm.

Next, we will describe the basic foundations for the concretion and adaptation of designs, belonging to the artistic or technical category to which they belong, to the logic of the New Bauhaus.

1. Form follows function.
This is the great mantra of the Bauhaus movement, verbalized by Louis Sullivan, which prioritizes the functionality of the designed elements over their aesthetics (although, of course, without forgetting it). Everything is designed based on a purpose that determines its final shape, seeking the perfect fusion between use and aesthetics.

2. Minimalism. Simple, it works.
One of the pillars of Bauhaus design is the search for harmony and simplicity. To achieve this goal, nothing better than straight lines and simple geometric shapes predominate in designs over curves and excessively ornate elements.

Yes, they coined it and carried it as a flag; and I can’t agree more: less is more. That it is very different from less is boring, and I refer to the wonderful, dynamic and brilliant works produced by the movement.

3. Look for the essence.
According to the Bauhaus school, in order to apply the two previous precepts and be able to design something useful and harmonious that fulfills its function, it is necessary to descend to the primary analysis of what is needed, connect with its essence and, from there, project solutions.

This is how Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, stated: “An object is determined by its essence. To design an object in such a way that it works properly – a container, a chair, a house – its essence must first be studied; since it must fully fulfill its mission, that is, it must usefully perform its functions, it must be durable, cheap and beautiful ”.

4. Use true and honest materials.
Honest with the environment, with the planet and with the process. Use materials that show the true nature of the designed objects and elements. The raw material is not hidden or camouflaged, but is put into value.

5. Aspire to the Gesamtkunstwerk. Aspire to the total work of art.
In its original Bauhasian conception by Walter Gropius, the Gesamtkunstwerk or total work of art, implied the search for the conjunction in a single creation of the 6 main fine arts: music, dance, poetry, painting, sculpture and architecture.

Obviously, the literal application of this precept is little or nothing realistic, but the principle that underlies it is, and that involves broadening the view and eliminating the separations between disciplines. That global and integrating gaze is the only one capable of generating the total work of art.

What if at the moment in which we find ourselves we look for a total work that integrates design, architecture, key competences, technology, artificial intelligence, sustainability, inclusion, care of the environment and circular economy, for example? Little could we find more total than that work. And more Bauhaus.

6. Better without serifs.
The maxim of form follows function also applies to the typographic environment, as it cannot be otherwise. If the form is the letter, the function is the maximum readability and anything that goes against this readability is our enemy.

That is why La Bauhus proposes the use of simple fonts or typographic families, dry stick and geometric. No frills, serifs, or useless decorations.

The Universal character of Herbet Bayer, with which all the official communications of the School were signed, or the Futura rationalist typeface, designed by Paul Renner, are perfect examples of Bauhasian typefaces that we can still find in numerous projects developed in multiple disciplines.

7. Primary colors.
We return to the primary, to the basics, also in relation to color.

The Bauhaus understands color from its ability to evoke emotions and for this the use of basic primary color palettes is recurrent. Yellow, red and blue, white and black are the colors that, connected with the basic geometric shapes (triangle, circle and square), generate the basic Bauhasian iconography and graphic universe.

8. Think big.
The dimension of the challenge is irrelevant; The Bauhaus is committed to broadening its vision when facing design processes, aware that addressing any problem that requires a solution, no matter how small the challenge, can be an incredible design opportunity that generates great value in itself. herself.

9. Mix your art with technology.
From the Bauhaus they invited teachers and students of the school to make the most of the technology available at that time to combine it with their art and create new works and functional prototypes.

Art and technology make up a new indivisible unit of action that helps us explore unknown territories and grow as artists and professionals.

Why not mix music with 3D printing? Graphic design with artificial intelligence? Fashion with biotechnology? Is there a limit? Definitely not.

10. Co-Design.
If you are an artist, look for an artisan. If you are an artisan, find an artist. Other hands, other eyes, other technologies and other procedures can help you evolve your works, develop new looks and make you grow with them.

11. Look for solutions that matter.
The Bauhaus taught us that design is a way of seeing the world and that through design solutions can be found to the global problems of society. Responses that, as the New European Bauhaus advocates, can be beautiful, sustainable and inclusive. Those are the ideas that transcend, those are the proposals that massively help communities and communities; Those are the solutions that matter.

12. Dare.
The Bauhaus was committed to action and experimentation, encouraging its students to innovate and explore different design solutions as an invaluable source of value and learning. Do, hit and learn. Make mistakes and learn.

Try different ways to solve a problem and follow the most radical path, the one that gives you the most surprises, the one that allows you to grow and learn more.

Give yourself permission. Dare yourself.

13. Break the rules.
And now forget about everything you’ve read. Walter Gropius would be proud of you if he could see that, even against the Bauhasian precepts just described, you have dared to create something new. Something that, from your beliefs and values, solves a problem for someone.

I would smile to see that you have dared. After all, that was the spirit of the Bauhaus.

3. Requirements to advance in the implementation of the new design paradigm of the New European Bauhaus.

A roadmap for all public and private actors (administrations, institutions, companies, architects, builders, designers, artists, activists, citizen movements …) who want to adopt and join the New European Bauhaus.

1. Mobilization of political and institutional will around priorities to promote policies, programs and design projects aligned with the New European Bauhaus.

2. Alliance between institutions, social organizations, design professionals in all disciplines, engineers and other professionals to implement the New European Bauhaus.

3. New regulatory development to turn design into an economic sector that generates companies, activities and new products and services that create revolutionary wealth.

4. Adoption of the European Green Pact when taking on any project that has to do with design in any of its disciplines.

5. Public / private agreement to put the professional group of design to work at the service of society as an economic sector that generates an economy.

6.- Total recycling of raw materials as a rule.

7. Public contracting and adaptation of all government projects to the requirements of the New European Bauhaus.

8. Ad hoc training of all professionals related to design in all their disciplines in the requirements of the New European Bauhaus.

The Bauhaus became the seed of design as we know it today and it will now serve as a lever for social change, as a tool to solve many of the problems of entire communities from a comprehensive, holistic, sustainable and beautiful vision.

With the New European Bauhaus a new design paradigm will be born. A design at the service of society and function, with the sole objective of making the citizens of the New Bauhaus freer and happier.

And Europe is stronger than ever.

We are counting on you.

Let’s go!!!
